This week, the spotlight is on a 1965 Chevrolet Malibu SS396 “Z16″ from the Brothers Collection. Powering this gorgeous Rally Red painted with white interior Malibu is a beastly 375 horsepower 396ci L37. This powertrain is very similar to the Corvette’s L78 396, except for the hydraulic cam and lower horsepower rating.

The Z16 packages were capable of running low 14s on stock true all day long — a totally impressive number for the time. They were also quite unique in the sense that they featured just about every optional upgrade in the standard Malibu package. They had a tilt steering wheel, clock mounted on the dash, 160 mph speedo, in-dash tach, and Muncie 4-speed.

Even though they had the SS badging, they had a unique rear trim, and mag-wheel inspired covers.

Only 201 Z16 packages were made by Chevrolet for the 1965 Malibu SS, and only came in three colors. This Rally Red is one of an estimated 65 still around today!
